Best Japan SEO Agencies for Global Companies in 2026

Choosing a Japan SEO agency is not just about finding someone who can translate your keywords.

Providers differ in how they research the Japanese market, who makes the SEO decisions, and how much they actually implement. They also differ in team size, content capacity, technical support, pricing, and whether they cover paid media, PR, or other channels.

This guide compares eight Japan SEO agencies, consultancies and specialist providers serving overseas companies.

Last reviewed: September 2026

How we selected these providers

This is not an exhaustive list of every SEO company operating in Japan.

Providers were selected because they meet most of the following criteria:

  • they actively market Japan SEO services to overseas companies in English;
  • they provide a substantive SEO service rather than translation alone;
  • they are visible in relevant Japan SEO searches, industry comparisons, or the competitive landscape reviewed for this guide;
  • they represent a useful and distinct delivery model for buyers to compare;
  • enough current public information is available to describe their services responsibly.

Not being included does not imply that a provider is weaker.

The purpose is to compare several different ways of buying Japan SEO — from regional agencies and full-service Japanese teams to independent specialists.

Japan SEO is still fundamentally Google SEO, but the language and buyer behavior create additional decisions.

Japanese search terms may use kanji, hiragana, katakana, romaji, or English, and different variants can produce different search intent.

The practical question is therefore not simply whether an agency can communicate in Japanese. It is who actually performs the Japanese keyword research, reads the live SERPs, and turns that evidence into page-level decisions.

Which type of Japan SEO provider fits you?

The right provider depends on what you actually need to buy.

A multinational coordinating organic search across several Asian markets may benefit from a regional agency.

A company entering Japan with no local execution team may need content writers, developers and SEO specialists together.

Another company may already have developers, writers and an international marketing team — and mainly need someone senior who can tell them what the Japanese search market requires and what to do first.

Zo Digital Japan

Zo Digital Japan is a Tokyo-based bilingual agency with a broad Japan SEO offering.

It is also one of the few providers here that publishes indicative pricing.

Consider Zo if you:

  • want an established bilingual agency team;
  • need ongoing execution as well as strategy;
  • want content and link-building support;
  • have an SEO budget in the several-thousand-dollar-per-month range.

Published indicative pricing: Initial engagements usually around $5,000–15,000; monthly packages typically $2,000–10,000, according to its SEO FAQ.

The Egg

Best for: Global companies managing Japan within a wider APAC SEO program

The Egg operates across multiple Asian markets rather than positioning itself purely as a Japan boutique.

Its Japan service lists native Japanese SEO specialists, localized keyword research, optimized content creation, link outreach and English-language analysis and reporting. Its Japanese SEO team is based in Japan and Hong Kong.

The Egg works well when you:

  • need SEO across several APAC markets;
  • want regional coordination;
  • require native Japanese content support;
  • prefer a larger regional agency structure.

The main distinction is regional scale: Japan can be managed as part of a broader Asian search program rather than as an isolated market.

Tokyo SEO Wizard

Best for: Companies prioritizing regular Japanese SEO content production

Tokyo SEO Wizard publishes the highest explicit monthly content volume among the providers compared here.

Its current SEO Ascend Japan plan includes six optimized articles per month, while MarketGATE SEO & Conversion includes eight.

It also lists on-page and technical SEO, reporting, localization, web consulting and monthly English online meetings among its capabilities.

Consider Tokyo SEO Wizard if you:

  • need several Japanese SEO articles every month;
  • want production volume built into the engagement;
  • need technical SEO alongside content;
  • value scheduled meetings and reporting.

The minimum contract period is six months.

Its inquiry form currently asks prospects to select a marketing implementation budget beginning at roughly $6,000/month. This is a budget qualifier, not a published SEO package price.

Humble Bunny combines Japanese SEO with a broader performance-marketing model.

Its Japanese SEO offering includes keyword research, localization, technical SEO, content marketing, link building, consulting and local SEO. PPC and PR are also core service lines.

  • also need PR or influencer-related work;
  • want several marketing channels coordinated locally.

Silkdrive

Best for: European companies wanting Japan SEO managed from the European side

Silkdrive is positioned differently from the Japan-based providers here: its strategic side is anchored in the Netherlands.

It offers multi-script keyword research, technical SEO, native Japanese content produced through Japan-based partners, AI-search optimization and English-language reporting. Technical implementation is also part of its published process.

Silkdrive may fit if you:

  • are headquartered in Europe;
  • want budgets, analytics and reporting coordinated on the European side;
  • still need native Japanese content production;
  • need wider cross-cultural or market-entry support.

Trees Consulting

Best for: Companies needing senior Japan SEO judgment with direct implementation when needed

Trees Consulting is the independent SEO practice of Tomomi Matsumoto, a native Japanese SEO specialist based in Japan.

You work with the same person from research through to implementation.

Typical work covers Japanese SERP and keyword research, page ownership, site architecture, content, technical priorities, internal linking and conversion paths.

The monthly service is async-first. Online strategy calls are available when useful, typically up to one 45-minute call per month.

Implementation can include creation, substantial rewrite or detailed review of one priority SEO page or article per month.

WordPress, landing-page and technical work can also be supported. Larger website builds or renewals are scoped separately when the SEO analysis shows they are necessary.

Published standard rate: $1,200/month.

A current public-launch offer is available at $750/month for six months for up to two additional engagements, while capacity remains available.

  • want the person making the strategy directly involved in implementation;
  • already have some internal or external production capability;
  • want to start with a smaller Japan SEO commitment.

How much does a Japan SEO agency cost?

The published examples in this market show why price alone is a poor comparison.

Do not compare monthly fees without comparing scope

A higher-priced engagement that includes several Japanese articles, technical execution and a team of specialists is not the same product as a smaller senior-led advisory and implementation engagement.

Before comparing prices, decide what you actually need:

  • senior strategy;
  • Japanese content volume;
  • technical implementation;
  • link building;
  • web development;
  • paid media;
  • PR;
  • multi-market coordination.

The useful question is not simply “Which provider is cheaper?”

It is:

“Which capabilities do we need to buy, and which do we already have?”

Strategy only, or implementation too?

This is one of the most useful distinctions to clarify before hiring a Japan SEO provider.

Some companies mainly need analysis and recommendations because their internal team can execute.

Others need their provider to:

  • write Japanese content;
  • edit commercial pages;
  • implement technical SEO;
  • build landing pages;
  • work directly in the CMS;
  • redesign or rebuild parts of the site.

If your internal development and content teams can move quickly, buying duplicate production capacity may be unnecessary.

If implementation is the bottleneck, however, a strategy-only engagement can leave the most valuable recommendations unfinished.

Ask this before signing:

Can this provider implement what it recommends, and what happens if the existing website itself needs to change?

How to choose a Japan SEO provider

1. Ask who actually researches the Japanese SERP

English-speaking sales support does not necessarily tell you who performs the Japanese search research.

Ask who personally evaluates:

  • Japanese keywords;
  • search intent;
  • local competitors;
  • the live Japanese SERP.

The same concept may appear across multiple Japanese scripts, and superficially similar queries can produce different results.

2. Ask who makes the SEO decisions

Find out who will decide:

  • which keywords matter;
  • which pages should own them;
  • whether a new page is required;
  • what should be consolidated;
  • what technical work comes first.

If senior access matters, establish that before the contract starts.

3. Separate content quantity from SEO strategy

Six or eight articles every month can be valuable when the search opportunity genuinely supports that volume.

But more content is not automatically better SEO.

Sometimes the higher-value decision is to:

  • rebuild one commercial page;
  • remove cannibalization;
  • restructure a directory;
  • fix indexation;
  • consolidate weak pages;
  • improve internal linking or conversion.

Ask how the provider decides whether a new article is needed.

4. Ask what implementation is included

Clarify whether the provider:

  • advises only;
  • edits pages;
  • produces content;
  • works with your developers;
  • makes CMS changes;
  • implements technical recommendations;
  • can support larger site changes when necessary.

5. Look for Japanese-search results, not just credentials

“Native Japanese,” “bilingual,” and “Japan expertise” are useful qualifications.

They are not outcomes.

Ask for examples involving:

  • Japanese rankings;
  • organic traffic;
  • leads or inquiries;
  • ecommerce outcomes;
  • content performance;
  • technical improvements.

6. Compare the commercial model

Check:

  • setup fees;
  • minimum contract term;
  • content included;
  • meeting model;
  • reporting;
  • implementation;
  • additional production fees;
  • ownership of pages, content and accounts.

7. Ask what happens if the lead specialist is unavailable

This matters especially with boutique firms and independent consultants.

Ask whether:

  • recommendations are documented;
  • your team owns the working files and accounts;
  • implementation history is recorded;
  • another person could continue the work if necessary.

A larger team usually offers more built-in redundancy. A smaller specialist model should compensate with clear documentation and client ownership.

8. Ask whether the provider can scale if Japan works

A small initial project may become a much larger program.

If success would require:

  • dozens of pages;
  • multiple developers;
  • large content volume;
  • paid acquisition;
  • PR;
  • several Asian markets;

ask whether the provider can scale with you or can work alongside additional vendors.

This is an area where larger agencies may have a structural advantage.

What the first six months often look like

Month 1: Understand the market

  • Japanese keyword research
  • SERP analysis
  • competitor review
  • technical diagnosis
  • page and site-structure review

Months 2–3: Fix the highest-priority gaps

  • existing-page improvements
  • new commercial or informational pages
  • internal links
  • technical fixes
  • page ownership and cannibalization

Months 4–6: Learn from real search data

Search Console and analytics begin to show:

  • which queries receive impressions;
  • which pages Google associates with them;
  • where rankings move;
  • where clicks and inquiries appear.

The plan should then change based on actual search behavior rather than continuing a fixed production schedule regardless of results.

Agency or independent Japan SEO specialist?

A larger agency and an independent specialist solve different problems.

A larger agency may be better if you need:

  • many Japanese articles every month;
  • several specialists working in parallel;
  • SEO, PPC, PR and creative under one contract;
  • large-scale development;
  • enterprise procurement support;
  • multi-country campaign management;
  • built-in team redundancy.

An independent specialist may be better if you:

  • primarily need senior SEO judgment;
  • already have writers or developers;
  • want direct access to the person making decisions;
  • want a smaller initial commitment;
  • prefer to add implementation only when it is actually required.

The question is not whether “agency” or “consultant” is inherently better.

How much organizational infrastructure does your project need right now?

10 questions to ask before hiring a Japan SEO agency

  1. Who will personally conduct our Japanese keyword and SERP research?
  2. Who will make the day-to-day SEO decisions?
  3. Is Japanese content created natively or translated from another market?
  4. How do you decide whether to create a new page or improve an existing one?
  5. What technical implementation is included?
  6. Can you work with our existing developers, writers and agencies?
  7. If the website itself is limiting SEO, can you help change or rebuild it?
  8. What exactly is included in the monthly fee and minimum term?
  9. What Japanese-search results can you show us?
  10. What happens if our project grows — or if the lead specialist becomes unavailable?

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a Japan SEO agency?

Start by deciding which capabilities you actually need.

A company with its own development and content teams may need Japanese search strategy more than another production team. A company with no local resources may need a full-service agency.

Then compare who performs the Japanese research, implementation scope, results, minimum commitment, team model and price.

What is the difference between a Japan SEO agency and a Japanese SEO agency?

The phrases are often used interchangeably.

What matters more is whether the provider actually conducts Japanese-language keyword, SERP and content work rather than simply translating an existing global SEO plan.

Do I need an SEO agency based in Japan?

Not necessarily.

Being based in Japan can make native-language research and local implementation easier, while a regional agency may be preferable when Japan is part of a larger APAC program.

Evaluate the people actually doing the work rather than the postal address alone.

How long does SEO in Japan take?

There is no fixed timeline.

Established sites can sometimes move on long-tail queries relatively quickly after targeted fixes. Competitive commercial keywords usually require several months of technical, content and authority development.

Early signals generally include indexation, impressions and long-tail query movement before major traffic or lead growth.

Should a Japan SEO agency create Japanese content for us?

Only when new content is actually needed.

Sometimes the correct action is a new article or landing page. In other cases, improving an existing page, changing information architecture or fixing technical problems has greater value.

A provider should be able to explain why a particular page needs to exist before producing it.

Should I choose the cheapest Japan SEO provider?

Not necessarily — but the most expensive provider is not automatically the safest either.

Compare the capabilities included in the engagement against what your organization already has.

A smaller senior-led engagement can be efficient when you already have implementation resources. A larger agency may offer better value when you need the production team as well.
